BAAABABABAA! It's the weekend round up (theme song pending)! This is where we highlight a few of the many events going on in Carroll County this weekend. CCSD Holds Pill Drop

Prescription drug abuse is one of the most serious addictions affecting Americans today, and it knows no race or class or age. It affects teenagers, and it affects the elderly. It affects the affluent, and it affects the poor. It is an equal-opportunity killer.

Panoramic Views from the Judicial Center

Hey all. If you don't have the pleasure of driving past the Judicial Center everyday, you may have missed how much it's grown upward and outward over the past few months.

On a few occasions, I've donned a hardhat and climbed to the center's fifth floor to take photos that have been shared on GrowCarroll and the county's Facebook page.

Relay for Life: Let's Beat Cancer Now

Apr 28, 2011 - Comments: 0 - Tags:

Cancer is a killer. We all know that, and we all know that it must be stopped. Science is moving at an amazing pace, and hopefully, one day soon, we'll have a cure for the scourge of a disease. But it's not just going to happen. Research takes money.

Every year, communities around the world participate in Relay for Life in an effort to bring about awareness of the disease and to raise money to help further efforts to eradicate it.

A Whole Lotta Shakin'

Apr 28, 2011 - Comments: 0 - Tags:

Great balls of fire, there is going to be a whole lotta shaking going on in Carrollton, GA, Friday, April 29, starting at 6 p.m. as the Sunnyside Cafe welcomes rock and roll bass guitar legend and author J.W. Brown and his daughter Myra Gail Brown. Rock'n'Roll's most famous father-daughter combo will be signing copies of JW's new book, "Whole Lotta Shakin'," detailing his life before, during and after his hit-packed stint as bassist -- and father-in-law -- of Louisiana wild man Jerry Lee Lewis.

Carroll's Most Famous Grave Sites

Apr 28, 2011 - Comments: 0 - Tags:

Three gravestones. If connected on a map, they’d form an obtuse triangle, cornering off the southwest tip of Carroll County, pointing down through the heart of Georgia and into the Gulf of Mexico. Collectively, they’re separated by less than 35 road miles; a visitor could see each of the three in several hours with time to spare for a quick lunch.

Help Storm Victims

Apr 28, 2011 - Comments: 0 - Tags:

Our heart goes out to all those affected by yesterday's violent string of tornadoes. Hundreds of people across the Southeast have been confirmed dead and thousands are without power, clean water or a roof over their heads.

There's no doubt that Carroll County was lucky. The worst of the storm cells bypassed us yesterday. But others weren't so fortunate.

Deadly Storms Bypass Carroll UPDATE

Apr 27, 2011 - Comments: 1 - Tags:

Carroll County emergency responders were up late last night monitoring the deadly storm that reaped destruction across the Southeast yesterday. Fortunately, the only damage seen locally was a felled tree off of Highway 16.

There's no doubt that Carroll County dodged a bullet last night. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution 11 people were killed statewide, and the death toll across the region was grimmer still.

Lifelong Learning Starts Now

Apr 26, 2011 - Comments: 0 - Tags:

What are you doing right now? Reading the internet? That's well and good, but you could be attending the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce's Lifelong Learning Expo.

The event, which is being held at the Burson Center in Carrollton, began at 3 p.m. today and will run until 7 p.m. tonight. The event features local institutions of learning (both higher and primary) and is aimed at showing the younger set and their parents all the educational opportunities that are available right here in Carroll County.

Retirement After 33 Years

Apr 25, 2011 - Comments: 0

The story starts in the late 1970s. Carole Walker had just started work with the Carroll County Tag Office back when it was in the courthouse in downtown Carrollton. Back then, residents were required to all get their car tags at the same time. What that meant: long lines. Really long lines. Sometimes they stretched all the way out the door and onto the street. What that also meant: people weren't going to give up their spot in line. No way. No how. Walker said she remembers folks braving awful storms and on one occasion, a fire. But did they get out of line?
