How to Make a Raised Bed Garden

It's that time of year. If you haven't gotten your garden in the ground already, don't panic. You still have a little bit of time, and by "a little bit of time" I mean you have about a week, give or take, depending on what you're thinking about putting in the ground. While you can probably get away with planting most spring veggies now, southern peas, peppers, winter squash, okra, corn and lima beans are still in their optimal-planting periods.

First things first. I’m not a doctor. I have never taken an advanced biology class, and I get kind of squeamish at the sight of my own blood. That said, any kind of “advice” I dole out in the coming few hundred words is simply that, and if your allergies are really getting you down (and nothing seems to lick ‘em), I urge you to go talk to a doctor or a trained specialist.

Who doesn’t love tomatoes (or as I like to call them, maters)? I’ve never been one to turn down a tomato sandwich, especially if it’s nice and coated in mayonnaise, and I know I’m not alone. The great thing about the red fruit (tomatoes aren’t actually vegetables FYI) is that’s it’s easy to grow. With a raised-bed garden, and a little elbow grease, you can have your own freshly-grown tomatoes in a little more than a month. But it’s not always that easy. In Georgia, there are a number of diseases that can affect tomatoes and ultimately spoil them.

The practice of composting sounds easy, right? Take a bunch of trash, throw it in a pile in the backyard, wait a few weeks and then you’ve made your own fertilizer. Well, you’re not far off. Composting isn’t difficult, per se, but you need to be aware of what you’re throwing in the pile. One bad apple really can ruin the bunch.

That said, here are a few things to keep in mind.
